Dual Credit Classes
SD MY LIFE
This website (linked above) includes valuable information on how to earn college credit while you are still in high school. It is possible for a student to graduate high school with an Associates Degree at a much less cost than a student would pay in college.
The graph to the right shows the cost of 1 credit hour in high school, 1 credit hour in college, 15 credit hours in high school, and 15 credit hours in college. If a student took one semester of college classes (15 credits) in high school during their junior and senior year they would have a savings of around $4,000.

The best part about taking these classes early is that taking college general classes in high school frees up time in your schedule in college to pick up another major, or even focus your studies to a more specific subject or topic.
Dual Credit courses also allow for students that do not have as many class offerings to explore other subjects. For example, some schools only offer one foreign language, often for two years. By taking college dual credit language classes a student may be able to fulfill a college admission requirement for foreign language. This is also the case with many other subjects.
Some students take many dual credit classes from one specific institution. Make sure that your credits are going to transfer to your chosen undergraduate school, as some students have to start all over upon arrival, to find that their credits do not transfer, even between schools in South Dakota. That being said, if your credits are not going to transfer to your school, or you are attending an out of state school that will not accept SD Board of Regents credits, take the classes anyway. Your college may allow you to test out of classes you already know the information on, or if you do end up having to retake a class, it will be easier for you, as you already know the information from high school.
